Case Summary:
Osteochondroma of the Distal Femur with Allograft Reconstruction
Osteochondroma of the Distal Femur with Allograft Reconstruction
Patient Diagnosis:
This young male patient presented with an osteochondrom on the posteromedial aspect of the distal femur.
Planned Procedure/Approach:
The surgeon requested a set of surgical guides for the right distal femur to accurately resect the pathological bone and to reconstruct using a patient-matched allograft.
A curved cutting plane was agreed to maxmise the amount of healthy bone preserved.
What Insight Surgery provided:
- Patient-specific 3D virtual and 3D printed anatomical models
- Virtual surgical plan – clearly detailing the patient and allograft guide operative processes
- Surgical Guide – facilitating a curved osteotomy
- Allograft Guide
Outcome/Benefits:
- The surgical guides allowed the surgeon to make the appropriate cuts with a higher degree of accuracy than making these osteotomies freehand and increasing the likelihood of stable fixation and osteointegration
- Using the Virtual Surgical Plan that was created prior to the surgery, it was possible for the surgeon to effectively determine the size and positioning of the required cuts. Overall, this meant less time was spent in the surgery for the procedure due to enhanced pre-surgical plans defined by the surgical team.
